Cayuga Lake State Park’s terrain is flat at lakeshore, where the beach and sun lawns are, then slopes gently uphill to campsites and cabins. The scenic highlight of the park is its expansive view of Cayuga Lake. In the shallow water near the park, largemouth bass, bullheads and carp thrive. In deeper water, anglers can catch northern pike, small mouth bass, lake trout, landlocked salmon and many other varieties of fish. The park has a boat launch, playground, playing field.

The vacation rental at Cayuga Lake State Park is located off Lower Lake Road on Cayuga Lake and is shaded by mature trees. The park provides lake rights, across Lower Lake Road, on the lake. Spacious grounds with picnic tables and a campfire ring adorn the property and a lakefront dock is available for tenants. The vacation rental has a fully enclosed porch with a view of Cayuga Lake. Indoor amenities include a dining room and counter space that can seat eight for meals, full kitchen with a stove, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, refrigerator, dishwasher, sink, flatware, plates, glasses, pots, pans, cooking utensils, one and a half baths, heat, hot water/shower, three bedrooms (two with double beds and one with two single beds), wood stove and a sleeper sofa (sleeps two) in the living room. Encompassing just over 2000 acres on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, Sampson State Park features camping and boating as the primary recreational activities. The park has a total of 309 campsites with 245 electric and 64 non-electric sites. The marina has just over 100 boat slips and a large multiple ramp launch site. A key feature of the park is the beautiful view of the lake at its center. Facilities include courts for tennis, horseshoes, basketball and volleyball, a swimming beach with nearby playground, a low impact fitness circuit and a scenic lake trail. Other popular activities include fishing, bicycling, jogging, geocaching, and nature watching. Picnic shelters are available and may be reserved for events.

During WWII, the Sampson State Park area was the site of the Sampson Naval Training Station.  During the Korean War, it became the Sampson Air Force Base.  The Park is also located next to the former Seneca Army Depot.

The park is home to a museum run by volunteer Air Force and Navy veterans. The only surviving building is the “brig” and hosts a museum featuring displays that depict the activities and lives of the hundreds of thousands Navy and Air Force personnel who trained for war.  The museum holds many artifacts and displays that were around when Sampson was a military base. The museum hours are depend on volunteer support, but are usually open on the weekend.

The Seneca Army Depot is the home of the world’s largest herd of white deer!

In 1941, 24 miles of security fencing enclosed the area now known as the Conservation Area (CA) of the former Seneca Army Depot. Captured within the fence line of the CA were several whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) of the normal brown coloration.

Within a few years, however, something unique happened. White pigmented deer began populating the brown deer herd within the CA. The U. S. Army, sensing something unique was taking place, gave the white deer protection while they managed the brown deer through hunting. This was necessary to keep the population within the carrying capacity of the habitat of the CA.

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge was established on September 12, 1938 as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. The refuge provides resting, feeding, and nesting habitat for waterfowl and other migratory birds. Montezuma is situated in the middle of one of the most active flight lanes in the Atlantic Flyway.

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is located at the north end of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The Refuge contains 2,860 hectares (7,068 acres) and is situated in Seneca, Wayne, and Cayuga Counties. The Refuge is 35 miles (56 km) west of Syracuse, 40 miles (64 km) north of Ithaca, and 45 miles (72 km) east of Rochester.
